The Great Divergence: China, Europe, and the Making of the Modern World Economy

Kenneth Pomeranz, "The Great Divergence: China, Europe, and the Making of the Modern World Economy."
Princeton University Press | ISBN: 0691090106 | 392 pages | PDF | 1,6 Mb

Pomeranz is a history professor at the University of California^-Irvine and the author of The Making of a Hinterland: State, Society, and Economy in Inland North China, 1853^-1937 (1993), an academic study that investigated the role of steam-powered transportation (among other developments) in the growth of China's Shantung Province. He is also the coauthor of the more popularly accessible The World That Trade Created (1999). Now he looks at the question of why sustained industrial growth began in northwestern Europe but not East Asia. To even ask the question can bring charges of Eurocentrism, but Pomeranz acknowledges the role of colonialism in Europe's growth. He emphasizes, though, Europe's access to America's resources as one of two contributing factors to industrial growth, the second being the widespread availability within Europe of coal as a fuel. After challenging the convention that Europe held an edge before 1800, he traces with scholarly diligence the diverging patterns of growth between Europe and China. Economics has the capacity to offer us deep insights into some of the most formidable problems of life, and offer solutions to them too. Combining a global approach with examples from everyday life, Partha Dasgupta describes the lives of two children who live very different lives in different parts of the world: in the Mid-West USA and in Ethiopia. Along the way, Dasgupta provides an intelligent and accessible introduction to key economic factors and concepts such as individual choices, national policies, efficiency, equity, development, sustainability, dynamic equilibrium, property rights, markets, and public goods.

Oxford Guide to English Grammar

Introduction
The Oxford Guide to English Grammar is a systematic account of grammatical forms and the way they are used in standard British English today. The emphasis is on meanings and how they govern the choice of grammatical pattern. The book is thorough in its coverage but pays most attention to points that are of importance to intermediate and advanced learners of English, and to their teachers. It will be found equally suitable for quick reference to details and for the more leisured study of broad grammar topics. A useful feature of the book is the inclusion of example texts and conversations, many of them authentic, to show how grammar is used in connected writing and in speech.

How Great Decisions Get Made: 10 Easy Steps for Reaching Agreement on Even the Toughest Issues

All too often, solving tough work issues can become a tug of war as clashing departments, priorities, personality styles, and other concerns threaten to destroy any possibility of a successful conclusion. But by sharing hopes, and focusing on information rather than debate, the path to agreement can become wonderfully clear.
How Great Decisions Get Made. shows how to bring out the best in people, so that the process of decision making cements groups together rather than pulling them apart. The book gives readers a simple 10-step process to help their people overcome seemingly intractable differences, paving the way for groups to:
* Embrace a world view filled with the possibility of creating better results together * Shift their attention from the stale “What should we do?” to a fresh “How can we achieve what we really want?” attitude * Tap into who they are to define and articulate their hopes
Readers looking for quick, exciting ways to energize their often contentious decision-making process will find all the help they need, from real-life scenarios showing the process in action to a self-assessment checklist. How Great Decisions Get Made provides the key to overcoming barriers, making people feel great about the work they do, and achieving extraordinary results.

This unique book offers 78 questions that leaders at all levels need to ask and answer both inside and outside the organization. Leaders who master this question-response technique will gain much useful information about what is really going on in their businesses, as well as the admiration of employees, customers, and others with whom they interact. How To Write A Great Query Letter

How To Write A Great Query Letter

How To Write A Great Query Letter
by Noah Lukeman

Many books have been written about the query letter. But few have been written by literary agents, who receive thousands of queries each year and who grapple with them on a daily basis. Even fewer books have been written by literary agents who are currently active, who are willing to write from the trenches and offer their perspective on why they reject query letters, and why they accept them.

New York literary agent Noah Lukeman, President of Lukeman Literary Management Ltd and author of three critically-acclaimed books on the craft of writing, has read thousands of query letters during his years as a literary agent. In this book, he offers his insights on the query letter, sharing an insider’s perspective, giving insights and practical tips about what works and what doesn’t.

The Grammar of Words

Each textbook provides a specific perspective on the discipline that it aims to introduce. Therefore, writing this book has not only been a challenge for me because of the didactic demands that each textbook imposes on its writer. It also forced me to rethink my own ideas on morphology in confrontation with those of others, and to come up with a consistent picture of what morphology is about. This perspective is summarized by the title of this book, The Grammar of Words, which gives the linguistic entity of the word a pivotal role in understanding morphology.

Even more important there are now new chapters on subjects not covered before: branding and Yellow Pages advertising plus a totally new approach to basic Internet advertising.

Trading To Win The Psychology Of Mastering The Markets

If you want to learn how to be a super-trader, then closely examine the concepts in this book. It is based on a proactive trading program that has helped my firm, SAC Capital Management, LLC, grow from a $20- million hedge fund to one handling over $500 million annually after only five years. I have been trading the stock market for twenty years. Originally, I made my trading decisions by watching the ebbs and flows of the ticker tape. I knew very little of the fundamentals of the companies I was trad- ing and based my decisions on the tape action. Later, as I refined my art, I began to combine it with a deeper understanding of the funda- mentals of the underlying companies, the industries, and the general market trends.
